The Meaning and Importance of Ruqyah in Islam

What is Ruqyah?

Ruqyah (plural: Ar-Ruqaa) is the practice of seeking protection, healing, and relief from harm through the recitation of Quranic verses, authentic supplications (duas), and the names of Allah. It is a powerful remedy prescribed in Islam and is deeply rooted in the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah. Ruqyah is used to treat various afflictions, including:

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself practised Ruqyah and encouraged his companions to do so, affirming that it is a legitimate form of healing that relies solely on Allah’s power.

The Islamic Basis for Ruqyah

Ruqyah is not a superstitious or mystical practice; it is an act of faith, backed by the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ. Allah states in the Quran:

“And We send down of the Quran that which is healing and mercy for the believers…”

(Surah Al-Isra 17:82)

This verse highlights that the Quran itself carries healing properties for both the body and the soul. Similarly, the Prophet ﷺ said:

“Make use of the two cures: honey and the Quran.”

(Ibn Majah, 3452)

This shows that Ruqyah, alongside natural remedies, is a part of Islamic healing.

The correct Ruqyah is performed by reciting verses and supplications with full faith in Allah, seeking His help without resorting to prohibited or superstitious practices.

Types of Ruqyah: Permissible (Shariah) vs. Impermissible

There are two types of Ruqyah:

1. Ruqyah Shariah (Islamic Ruqyah) – This is the only permissible form of Ruqyah. It involves reciting:

Verses from the Quran (e.g., Ayat-ul-Kursi, Surah Al-Falaq, Surah An-Nas)

Authentic supplications taught by the Prophet ﷺ

The names and attributes of Allah

Blowing over oneself or on water/olive oil and applying it

2. Ruqyah Shirkiyyah (Forbidden Ruqyah) – This includes:

Seeking help from jinn, spirits, or soothsayers

Using unknown symbols, charms, or incantations

Practices involving sacrifices, talismans, or written amulets (taweez)

Anything that contradicts the teachings of Islam

The Prophet ﷺ clearly forbade engaging in any form of Ruqyah that contains Shirk (associating partners with Allah). Authentic Ruqyah relies solely on Allah’s words and permission for healing.

How to Perform Ruqyah on Yourself or Others

Ruqyah can be done in a simple yet effective way:

1. Begin with a sincere intention – Seek healing only from Allah alone.

2. Recite the following verses and supplications:

Surah Al-Fatihah (7 times)

Ayat-ul-Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255)

Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq, Surah An-Nas (3 times each)

Any other Quranic verses related to healing

Prophetic supplications (e.g., “Bismillah…”)

3. Blow lightly over yourself or the person in need (or on water, olive oil, or honey).

4. Rub your hands over the affected area, or drink the Ruqyah water for healing.

5. Repeat daily, especially in the morning and evening.

Ruqyah can be performed on oneself, children, family members, or even one’s home for protection against evil eye and negative influences.

The Benefits of Ruqyah

Strengthens faith (Iman) – Increases reliance on Allah for healing.

Provides protection – shields against spiritual and physical harm.

Relieves anxiety and stress – Calms the heart and mind.

Enhances barakah (blessings) in life – Brings peace and positivity.

Conclusion

Ruqyah is a powerful healing method in Islam, rooted in faith, trust, and reliance upon Allah. Whether facing physical sickness, spiritual harm, or psychological distress, turning to Ruqyah with sincerity and consistency can bring relief and protection.

However, Ruqyah should be performed with patience and firm belief—it is Allah alone who heals, and Ruqyah is merely a means to seek His mercy.

May Allah grant healing to all those in need and protect us from every harm. Ameen.
