Evil Eye
The Evil Eye – What Is It?
The evil eye (Al-‘Ayn) is a harmful force caused by envy and admiration, where a person’s gaze—whether intentional or unintentional—brings harm to another. It can affect a person’s wealth, health, beauty, success, family, faith, or even happiness.
The Quran on the Evil Eye
Allah warns us in the Quran:
“And from the evil of the envier when he envies.”
📖 (Surah Al-Falaq 113:5)
How Does the Evil Eye Work?
Ibn Qayyim (رحمه الله) explains in Zad al-Ma’ad:
“The evil eye is like an arrow shot from the soul of the envier toward the person they envy. If the target is unprotected, the arrow may harm them. But if they are armed with protection, the arrow will have no effect and may even return to the one who launched it.”
The Prophet (ﷺ) on the Evil Eye
✅ “The evil eye is real. If anything could outdo the decree of Allah, it would be the evil eye.”
📖 (Sahih Muslim)
✅ Aishah (رضي الله عنها) said:
“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to tell me to recite Ruqyah (incantations) for protection against the evil eye.”
📖 (Sahih Muslim & Bukhari)
How to Protect Yourself from the Evil Eye?
Recite Morning & Evening Adhkar
Say “MashaAllah” when admiring something
Seek refuge in Allah with Ruqyah (Quranic protection)
Avoid excessive display of blessings
Use Surah Al-Falaq & Surah An-Nas regularly
The evil eye is real, but Allah’s protection is stronger. Strengthen your faith and shield yourself with dhikr and dua.
Envy & Its Types
Envy (Hasad) is a negative emotion that can lead to harmful effects, including the Evil Eye (Al-‘Ayn). There are different degrees of envy:
1️⃣ Malicious Envy (Hasad)
This is the worst kind of envy, where a person wishes for someone’s blessing to be taken away—even if they don’t receive it themselves. Their resentment is purely because they don’t want others to have that blessing.
2️⃣ Selfish Envy
This occurs when someone wants a blessing to be removed from another person so they can have it instead. Unlike the first type, this form of envy is based on personal desire rather than pure malice.
3️⃣ Harmless Envy (Ghibtah)
This is a permissible form of envy where a person wishes to have the same blessing as another without wanting it to be taken away from them.

✅ Heart palpitations
✅ Pain in the lower back and shoulders

How to Protect Yourself from the Evil Eye
1️⃣ Morning & Evening Adhkar
The best protection is consistent dhikr. Ibn Al-Qayyim (رحمه الله) said:
“The morning and evening adhkar play the role of a shield; the thicker it is, the more its owner will be protected. Rather, its strength can reach such an extent that the arrow shot at it will bounce back to affect the one who shot it.”
2️⃣ Say “MashaAllah” & Make Dua
When admiring something—whether it belongs to you or someone else—say:
✨ MashaAllah TabarakAllah (ما شاء الله تبارك الله)
✨ Allahumma Barik (اللهم بارك)
3️⃣ Be Cautious with What You Share
🔹 Only share blessings with those who will genuinely be happy for you.
🔹 Avoid overexposure on social media—people can unintentionally harm you with their gaze.
🔹 Don’t compare your life to others or feel envious of their blessings.
4️⃣ Strengthen Your Connection with Allah
💛 Give salaam and show kindness to others.
💛 Make dua for those you envy to remove negative feelings.
💛 Teach children to recite Ayat Al-Kursi & the last 3 Surahs of the Quran before sleep.

How to Treat Evil Eye?
1️⃣ Recite Ruqyah (Quranic Healing)
Recite over yourself, or if the affliction is severe, listen to ruqyah audios or visit a qualified raaqi.
2️⃣ Water Method (If Known Who Gave the Evil Eye)
The Prophet (ﷺ) instructed ‘Amir ibn Rabi’ah to perform ghusl (ritual washing) and pour the used water over the afflicted person. If this isn’t possible:
🔹 Perform ruqyah on water and bathe with it daily for 10-20 days.
🔹 Surahs for Protection:
📖 Surah Al-Falaq
📖 Surah An-Nas
📖 Surah Al-Ikhlas
📖 Ayat Al-Kursi (2:255)
